WE’RE BACK and READY for a FESTA!
The 2022 Carnaval Parades in Brazil have been moved to the last two weeks of April, so we thought we’d do one right here at Lula – our old stomping ground from years ago! We’re excited to be back with an evening of exciting music, dance, and even a chance to sit in, and play in a traditional ‘Canja’. (Bring your instrument!).
The night features A Fantástica Bateria from Toronto’s Escola de Samba, and Roda de Samba – Toronto’s traditional sambistas playing samba de raiz, and a few surprises. You’ll feel like you’ve just arrived at a Carnaval party, in the throes of preparing to hit the streets!!
To get the evening warmed up Maurício from @aruadances and Marcia from Forró for All (https://linktr.ee/forroforalltoronto) will teach a couples forró dance lesson starting at 7:30.

A Fantástica Bateria – Escola de Samba de Toronto
As pioneers of the tradition in Canada and supported through its association with the Royal Conservatory of Music, A Fantástica Bateria is a forum for the study, practice, and performance of one of Brazil’s most creative art forms: the Samba Enredo from Carnaval.
Drawing on both the talents of Toronto’s Brazilian community and on the musical resources of a small army of honorary Brazilians, the Escola de Samba de Toronto is widely recognized as one of the more important cultural links between Toronto and Brazil.
The musical director of the Escola de Samba de Toronto is percussionist Alan “Canadense” Hetherington, a devotee of the Samba Enredo tradition of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo since 1990. At the receiving end of Hetherington’s knowledge is the Escola de Samba’s core, a percussion bateria.
The Escola de Samba de Toronto was originally formed because of the desire by the Brazilian community in Toronto to participate in the city’s summer festivities. Today, it is a forum for the study, practice, and performance of one of Brazil’s most creative art forms. Our roots and influences stem from some of the most highly revered proponents of the tradition including Mestre Serjão from the rural Escola de Samba Arco Iris in Jundiaí, São Paulo; Mestre Sombra of Mocidade Alegre (SP); Mestre Odilon (Grande Rio – Rio de Janeiro) and Mestre Celinho (Unidos da Tijuca – RJ). Each of these escolas embodies the spirit that drives the Escola de Samba de Toronto.
Roda de Samba de Toronto
Roda de Samba de Toronto is one of the most traditional grassroots samba bands in Toronto, bringing classic samba to Canada since 2014. A band of friends gathered together to play during that year’s soccer World Cup then moved on to bi weekly presentations that became a tradition and fundamental part of the exciting Bloor Street West cultural mix, bringing a loyal and highly energetic crowd to the area on Saturday afternoons for the next four years, and to many other places after that.
Grassroots samba, or “samba de raiz” as its usually called in Brazil, has a little something for everyone: for those who would love to be in Rio de Janeiro for Carnaval, to those who would love to dance to some mellow tunes together, everybody finds something to enjoy when real samba is played.
Roda de Samba de Toronto brings together friends Carlos Cardozo on cavaquinho and voice, Cristiano de Oliveira on percussion and voice, André Valério on 7-string guitar and Dijerdam “Baiano” Gomes on percussion
