During Sikh Heritage Month we celebrate the many contributions Canadians of Sikh heritage have made to our country and communities. We also must recognize the systemic racism many Sikhs have faced living in Canada.

The Toronto Raptors basketball team boasts one of the most diverse fan bases in North America, and a Sikh man in a turban is one of the most recognizable faces in the seats. Nav Bhatia, better known as “The Superfan,” for his love of the Toronto Raptors hasn’t missed a Raptor’s home game since they first began playing in 1995! His goal is to unite people of all ages and backgrounds through the game of basketball so they don’t have to face the discrimination and racism he faced over the years as a visible minority. When Nav first immigrated to Canada, he took a job at a car dealership and, after he was made general manager, every employee quit except one quit, the rest refusing to work for a Sikh. The CBC documentary The Nav Bhatia Story explores how a self-made businessman who immigrated to Canada in the 1980’s became the Toronto Raptors’ beloved Superfan and his efforts to make lives better along the way.

Ramadan Kareem everyone! We all know that nothing beats celebrating Ramadan in Egypt, but ESA is bringing you the next best thing!
